Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club

In the early 1960s, Torquay surf beach was crowded during summer and many people would walk around the point to the back beach, or Fossil Beach, as it was known. Whenever swimmers got into difficulties the locals would go to Joe Sweeney’s (1932-2015) home on the hill behind the dunes, because they knew he was a Torquay Surf Life Saving Club member. Joe would arrive with his surfboard in the ute to perform a rescue. However it was not until 1963 when a drowning occurred that a committee was selected to form the Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving club.
